We are hoping to find a breed-experienced rescue partner for a 14-week-old Cane Corso puppy!
This puppy initially presented with typical, social puppy behavior in the shelter - loose, wiggly body language, easy to handle, and tolerant of medical intake and restraint. However, shortly after placement in a home, more concerning behaviors have come up.
Behavioral Concerns:
- Resource guarding (food-related) observed in the home
- Level 2 bite to an adult during a feeding situation
-
Reported conflict with other dogs around food in the home
- Some initial growling with the original finder
The bite incident occurred when the puppy stopped eating and bit the adopter’s hand in close proximity to the food source. Given the puppy’s age and breed, we think this is an early indicator that will require experienced handling and behavior modification, not a typical pet home placement through our adoption program.
Additional Notes: There have been no issues with handling in shelter (leashing, carrying, vaccinations). The puppy has been described as food motivated and toy interested. Seems like the exposure to other dogs were okay at first, but guarding behaviors escalated in a home environment.
At just 14 weeks old, this puppy is in a critical developmental window. Our fear is that if this puppy continues to practice this behavior or get repeatedly returned for this issue, it could become a more serious issue in a few weeks to months. With the right intervention now, there is significant opportunity to redirect behavior and set her up for success. Without it, risk will increase as the dog matures into a powerful adult.
If you or your organization has experience with similar cases and the resources to support this puppy, please reach out.
